Whether you’re gliding along the river on a paddle, delighting in the fragrant blooms of gardens, or enjoying a spirited round of disc golf, there’s something to captivate outdoor enthusiasts of all ages in this vibrant county.

 1. Suwannee River State Park, Live Oak

Florida State Parks, including Suwannee River State Park, are dedicated to fostering connections with nature and promoting conservation. They even offer special programs like junior ranger activities for young adventurers. Suwannee River State Park, open every day of the year with a $5 admission fee, offers a range of outdoor activities such as biking, birdwatching, boating on the Suwannee and Withlacoochee rivers, camping, hiking, fishing, paddling, and picnicking.

2. Heritage Park and Gardens, Live Oak

Heritage Park and Gardens, a charming historic site, welcomes visitors to unwind in its gardens, enjoy picnics or host events. Explore the garden’s array of free amenities, including colorful flowers, a serene koi pond, and inviting arbors. Take a stroll along the shaded walking trail, enjoy a round of disc golf or let the kids play on the playground and baseball field. Private tours of the mansion are also available for a small fee, providing a glimpse into its fascinating history.

3. First Federal Sportsplex, Live Oak

The First Federal SportsPlex is a vibrant hub for sports enthusiasts, managed by Suwannee Parks & Recreation. This illuminated complex boasts five ball fields, complete with batting cages and bullpen mounds, serving as the home ground for local baseball and softball leagues. Additionally, it offers a range of youth and adult sports programs. Beyond the diamond, visitors can enjoy two asphalt tennis courts, two playgrounds, a 3,500 square-foot skate park, a splash pad, and a 2/3-mile dog-friendly walking and fitness trail, making it a dynamic destination for recreation and leisure.

4. Little River Springs, Branford

Covering 125 acres, Little River Springs boasts two nature trails, abundant wildlife viewing spots, and a pristine 72-degree spring ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Admission is $5, and the park welcomes visitors from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between April and October, and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November to March.

From nonprofit animal conservation facilities to engaging outdoor garden workshops, Suwannee County offers a diverse range of enjoyable and educational attractions suitable for the entire family.

5. Mystic Jungle Educational Facility, Live Oak

Mystic Jungle Educational Facility Inc. in Live Oak offers visitors a chance to see endangered and exotic animals, with a focus on the Asian Leopard. Admission is $10 per person (ages 3 and up). In spring/summer, it’s open Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. In the fall/winter, hours are Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with tours at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m.

6. Hearthstone Gardens, Wellborn

Hearthstone Gardens welcomes visitors daily with complimentary admission to its serene and pet-friendly outdoor haven, boasting a collection of meticulously curated themed gardens. For those eager to delve deeper, guided tours led by knowledgeable experts unveil hidden treasures, wildflowers, and bird species upon special request. Committed to sharing the joy of gardening, Hearthstone Gardens hosts monthly workshops covering an extensive range of horticultural topics. Additionally, a comprehensive gardening course is available, focusing on essential skills including soil health, composting techniques, and sustainable food production methods, empowering enthusiasts to cultivate thriving gardens of their own.

7. Birds of Prey, Live Oak

Birds of Prey provides a range of immersive experiences, from classes and workshops to public programs and falconry sessions, allowing guests to closely interact with hawks and owls. Participants have the unique opportunity to hold and fly these magnificent birds while wearing protective gloves. These experiences, available by reservation only, are held off 165th Road in Live Oak. Additionally, school field trips are conducted at Hearthstone Gardens, offering an educational adventure into the fascinating world of falconry and wildlife conservation.

8. Busy Bee Travel Plaza, Live Oak

Busy Bee sponsors numerous family-friendly events year-round, from the 4th of July fireworks to the snowy wonderland of Christmas on the Square. So, it’s no wonder that its expansive travel center off I-10 is a family-friendly destination in its own right.
